Students in grades 3-5 from the Elizabeth S. Brown Elementary and Joseph G. Luther Elementary Schools who won an essay contest about what a police officer means to them have also been invited to read their essays aloud at the ceremony.

As part of the ceremony, the department will honor those in the law enforcement profession who have given their lives in service, including the department’s own Lt. Robert Manuel Cabral and Sgt. Randall E. Shea.

The ceremony takes place on the heels of National Police Week, which is the calendar week that May 15 falls on as proclaimed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The week was established by a joint resolution of Congress in the same year and honors law enforcement officers across the country, paying special recognition to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
