Swansea Free Public Library & Main Street To Close Ahead of Event

Town Administrator Mallory Aronstein would like to invite community members to attend Swansea’s 5th Annual Holiday in the Village celebration this weekend.

“Every year we eagerly await this celebration as it is a great way to kick off the holiday season for all ages,” Town Administrator Aronstein said. “This year’s celebration is extra special as we will be dedicating a bench in memory of former Town Administrator John MacAuliffe, who helped to spearhead this event. We hope to see everyone there!”

WHEN:

Saturday, Dec. 4 from 5-8 p.m.

WHERE:

The event will begin at the Swansea Dam with events to follow at numerous locations along Main Street, including the Case Jr. High School, Swansea Free Public Library, Swansea Fire Station #1 and more.

Limited parking for the event will be available at the Brown School, 29 Gardners Neck Road. Limited handicapped accessible parking will be available at the School Administration Building, 1 Gardners Neck Road, for those in need of it.

Additional parking will also be available at Veterans Park on Milford Road and a hay wagon will transport community members parking there from the parking lot to Main Street to help people cover the distance.

WHAT:

The Town of Swansea would like to inform community members of a few housekeeping items ahead of the 5th annual Holiday in the Village celebration tomorrow.

Beginning at 3 p.m., the Swansea Free Public Library will close to the public in preparation for the holiday celebration. At 4 p.m., Main Street will close to traffic for the event. Community members should make note of this road closure and avoid the area if possible.

Tomorrow’s celebration will kick off with a small dedication ceremony of a bench in memory of former Town Administrator John MacAuliffe just before the tree lighting. Following the dedication ceremony, the award-winning Case High School Band will perform during the official tree lighting ceremony at the Swansea Dam.

At 6 p.m., Santa Claus will be arriving via fire truck at the gazebo right outside the Swansea Free Public Library to take pictures and speak with community members.

The Holiday in the Village celebration will also feature:

  • Just Winging it and Big Daddy BBQ food trucks located behind the library with tasty treats for enjoyment
  • The Swansea Free Public Library’s reading of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.
  • Magician Skip Daniels performances in the Case Jr. High gym at 5:45 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m
  • Stony Creek Farm will host a petting zoo on the Christ Church lawn and offer wagon rides up and down historic Main Street throughout the evening
  • Visit the beautiful historic Stevens Home, where you will have an opportunity to participate in their holiday giving tree and visit with the Swansea Historical Society

Swansea’s Holiday in the Village Celebration

The Holiday in the Village Celebration began in 2016 as part of the Town of Swansea’s year-long 350th Anniversary celebration. Then-Town Administrator John McAuliffe came up with the concept and spearheaded the event with a group of 350th Committee volunteers. What was supposed to be a one-time event had such an amazing turnout that a core group of volunteers, with other groups and Town departments, have continued to hold the celebration each year on the first Saturday evening in December.
